What is User Services Platform (TR-369)?

USP Protocol Guide | Comprehensive Overview of USP/TR-369 for ISPs and Service Providers

Next-Gen Device Management for Connected Networks

USP / TR-369 Device Management

TR-369, also known as the User Services Platform (USP), is a standardized remote device management protocol. It offers management and monitoring functions for a wide range of connected devices, including access gateways, WiFi routers, telephones, IoT devices, and virtual services like containerized applications. Designed as a successor to the widely used TR-069 protocol, TR-369 provides a consistent and interoperable framework, addressing the shortcomings of its predecessor while supporting new applications. This makes it adaptable for managing both current and future device fleets.

How does USP work?

Telcos and service providers need a reliable way to bootstrap, upgrade, manage, and monitor the expanding ecosystem of connected devices. The Broadband Forum introduced the CPE WAN Management Protocol (TR-069) in 2004, now with over a billion deployments.

TR-369, or the User Services Platform (USP), builds on the foundation of TR-069, evolving into the new industry standard for device lifecycle management. TR-069 and USP can coexist seamlessly, enabling easy onboarding of TR-069 devices onto a USP Controller. USP offers the flexibility to communicate with multiple controllers simultaneously, allowing for tailored use cases and safe business expansion with clear separation of concerns.

Benefits for ISPs and Operators

The USP protocol establishes a persistent connection between devices, featuring the USP Agent, and services, represented by the USP Controller. This connection facilitates data exchange through USP Messages, which operate on a data model similar to TR-069 but enhanced for greater complexity. USP Messages function in two ways: through a request/response system where the Controller queries or modifies the data model, or via notifications where the Agent pushes updates to the Controller as new data becomes available.

What is a USP Agent?

A USP Agent is software embedded in a device's firmware, implementing the USP protocol to connect with a USP Controller and exchange data. It provides a data model based on the established TR-181i2 specification, known as the supported data model, which links to the device's configuration, services, and status information via internal protocols. This enables the USP Controller to interact effectively with the system.

What is a USP Controller?

The USP Controller is a service-side function that enables USP Agents to connect, exchange data, and implement necessary use cases. It can be integrated into specific applications, such as remote device management systems or self-service apps on customer smartphones. Alternatively, the USP Controller can operate as a standalone system, allowing other systems to interact with devices via northbound APIs, such as for monitoring platforms or customer support help desks.
